the technical university, and makes it easier for students to transfer after successfully completing their studies. " It is better for students to remain in their learning environment as long as they can," emphasises Van Noort, " It increases their study success. We wanted to use the character of the building, the atmosphere and the existing facilities to inspire students and encourage them to spend more time inside the building. Walking around the building, you will now find students everywhere - in the lab areas, in small seminar rooms, in large meeting rooms and in the main concourse." More incoming students One of the ambitions was to make the building as welcoming and transparent as possible, especially at the entrance ( north side) and inside the building. To achieve this clever use was made of plenty of ( energy- efficient) glass. " It is a feeling you have wherever you are in the building," says Marian van Noort. " Even when walking outside you are able to look into one of our most beautiful laboratories. It is clear that technical studies are taught in this building. In recent years fewer students signed up for the classic technical courses. The modern and inviting character of our building, however, has undoubtedly contributed to a 26% increase in the number of incoming students in September 2009. Over the next few years we hope this number will increase to around 1800 students." The Netherlands, ' knowledge land' " Learning should be fun," says project architect Jorge Moura. " The Netherlands is a ' knowledge land' and this new building was designed to be an inspiring learning and working environment for students. We have certainly managed to accomplish that. We are proud to have had Royal Haskoning as the architect of this building. The school has become an example of the characteristics that we as a consultancy also want to communicate: creativity, sustainability, innovation and intensive cooperation between internal and external disciplines that complement each other."
