President's forewordWhen I become your President I was immenselyproud, and undertook to challenge myself with mymain goal of positive, inclusive and opencommunication which included visiting the Regionsand Centres, meeting the members and sharingvalues, views and issues. This is what a professionalinstitute is about; it is at its core and one of theprime reasons members choose to join 'the club'.My travels to the Regions and Centres provided thetime and the opportunity to see more of the UnitedKingdom, the Republic of Ireland and Hong Kongthan I would ever have seen otherwise. Thank you allfor being wonderful hosts and enabling me to dothis. I was also able (with your Vice-PresidentTechnical) to visit the winning projects in theTechnical Excellence and Alan King Awards, exceptthe Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, although I was ableto make the presentation to the winning practice,Benoy and our representative member from Benoy,Neil Kee ACIAT, in Hong Kong during the President'svisit in April.I was also delighted that on my 'watch' as Presidentthe new Wales Region was launched and has quicklyestablished itself on the Institute scene - excellent!I have also been able to write a column in each issueofATto report the work that goes on in CentralOffice and also that done by those activelycommitted members determined to better thediscipline and profile of Architectural Technology.The now very well established and successful use ofthe various social media that CIAT is a part of, suchas LinkedIn, TCN, Facebook and Twitter, is excellent.Please participate? but do not worry if you do notwish to though, as our primary link to the membersis still through the Institute's magazine. However,students have been receiving AT electronically for acouple of years now which has worked very well. Wealso notify you via email with your Region/Centrecommunications (sent by post to those without emailaddresses) and of course the weekly Enewsletter. Theweekly Enewsletter has become an effective way toshare the latest construction industry information,rather than waiting for its publication in the bi-monthly magazine.A more glamorous development during myPresidency has been the launch of our promotionalfilms, and by the end of this year we will have eightsuch films. Last year's topics included 'considering acareer in Architectural Technology', a consumer filmfor exhibitions such as Grand Designs, and threeexcellent case studies. This year we have three films: on the benefits ofmembership, the completion of the ProfessionalOccupational Performance (POP) Record and theProfessional Practice Interview. All are of anextremely high quality and I invite you watch themand recommended them to others. They are alsoopen to all to watch on our YouTube channelaccessed via our website.As part of the increased importance of online workingand more interactive website use, www.ciat.org.ukhas developed further, with increased news andevents listings, additional forums and onlinemembership applications. My diary has been extremely full with the number offunctions, meetings and events I have attended onyour behalf. It has made the two years go byincredibly fast. My duties have included meetingPresidents and Chief Executives from fellowinstitutes, attending Government meetings ontopical issues, lobbying for increased recognition aswell as fabulous social events hosted by our peers.One of the most productive events is the annualconference hosted by the Construction IndustryCouncil (CIC); a two-day event discussing verytopical issues such as the Green Deal and the LowCarbon Economy with politicians and leadingprofessionals from across our industry.From my Presidential Tour, I am keenly aware of themixed experiences that our members are having withthe recession and cuts, and that we are not yet at the'end of the tunnel'. The Institute, however, is therefor you; we provide guidance and support where wecan and I would personally like to thank you formaintaining your membership, which is valued andrespected.
