50MANAGING HEALTH RISKSOur approach to managing healthWe are committed to honouring our health and safetycommitments and sustaining an environment that promotesthe safety, health and wellbeing of our employees and theirfamilies, our contractors and the communities where weoperate.Our CEO is ultimately accountable for the health andwellbeing of our people, embodying our commitment topromote this important issue. Healthcare delivery,occupational health and hygiene policies, standards,monitoring and the auditing thereof is the responsibility of the Company's Health Department. Responsibility forthe implementation of occupational health and hygiene in practice resides with line management.We partner with the government, our communitiesand our peers to achieve the common goal of improvedhealth and wellbeing. We participate in forums andcollaborate with industry peers and government nationallyand internationally, including through the South AfricanChamber of Mines' Health Policy Committee and theICMM Health and Safety working groups. This enables usto benchmark our health and safety activities interventionand outcomes. We comply with all relevant South Africanlegislation and adhere to international conventions andbest practice. We aim to reduce exposure to risk, and toeducate and to help affected employees and contractorsto enable them to manage the impacts of ill health throughrisk assessments and surveillance. Managing HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis in the WorkplaceHIV/AIDS has had a marked impact on illness rates,absenteeism and employee deaths as well as the generalwellbeing of the communities where we operate. From our HIV testing statistics we believe one in five of ouremployees is HIV positive. It presents a risk to ourbusiness but one that we believe can be managed. HIV prevalence accounts for the sharp increase inreported incidents of Tuberculosis. Two new cases ofExtreme Drug Resistant Tuberculosis were reported in2010 amongst our employees. The table below provides a summary of ourperformance:We are encouraged by the number of Lonminemployees on our ART programme, but we failed to reachour target of 620 employees in our wellness programmeswith only 498 employees enrolled. A contributing factor ofthis is that some employees are redirected to participatein our ART programme on entry into the wellnessprogramme as a result of their CD4 counts. Once an HIV-positive employee's CD4 T-lymphocyte count is below the acceptable limit, they are encouraged to join the ART programme. We make this available through theemployee's medical aid with no additional cost. ART are offered to employees for life.Our partnership with global mining companies to fundVirax's Southern Africa HIV Therapeutic Vaccine Projectdrew to a close in 2010. Although this trial failed to yielda proven therapeutic vaccine against HIV, we believe thatthere was an encouraging move in the right direction.Eliminating Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)NIHL remains the most significant occupational disease in theplatinum mining industry. As such NIHL is a key occupationalhealth risk faced by our employees and contractors. We continue to support the directive issued by theDepartment of Mineral Resources in 2007 to realise zeronew cases of NIHL. We have a comprehensive hearingconservation programme in place supported by a Group-wide risk management framework which builds on theguidelines of the South African mandatory Code of Practicefor noise. This includes a workplace noise assessment,personal exposure monitoring, silencing of loud equipment,education and training, medical surveillance reporting andreview. As a preventative measure, employees andcontractors who are exposed to noise levels risks arescreened annually and individuals exposed to high noiselevels undergo audiograms every six months. We have focused on reducing the causes of NIHL bynoise attenuation of equipment with sound pressure levelsexceeding 110dB(A).To date, we have silencedundergroundfans, pumps and loaders to below 110 dB.We have achieved our target of reducing our numberof new NIHL cases by 10% by 2010. Newly diagnosedcases of NIHL were reduced from 45 in 2009 to 40 in2010 representing a 11.1% improvement. 28 cases werecompensated including three cases from 2009.
