26Spire Healthcare Annual Review 2010Corporate social responsibility continued. A team of 20 people from Spire Leicester Hospital raised £10,000 when they took part in the 26.2 mile Breast Cancer Awareness Moonwalk. 12 staff and consultants from Spire Murrayfield Hospital (Edinburgh) participated in the Caledonian Challenge, raising £8,000 by walking 56 miles in less than 24 hours. The annual charity ball at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital was attended by 400 guests from the medical and business community and generated £14,500 for health-related children's charities, including Brian House Children's Hospice, Wishing Well House, Red Rose School, The Valdete Trust, the NSPCC Acorn Centre and Blackpool Carers Centre Reputation Robina Addison, foster mother to 16-year-old Kade Romain from Trinidad, explains how the compassion and surgical skill of the cosmetic surgery team at Spire Murrayfield Hospital (Edinburgh) has helped to improve the hearing of her foster daughter."Kade was born without ears and, despite having partial hearing in one ear, she was sent to a special needs home in Trinidad, which was ill-equipped to effectively care for her. Having got to know her, I wanted to help her to get the medical care that she deserved in the UK.On referral from a fellow paediatrician, we met a leading surgeon in ear reconstruction surgery, Mr Ken Stewart, and his team at Spire Murrayfield Hospital. He explained a complex procedure in which cartilage is harvested from Kade's ribs, sculpted into ears and grafted onto her head. Once the ears are in place, a bone-anchored hearing aid fits onto a band that amplifies sound and dramatically improves hearing. Thanks to the compassion and dedication of the team who waived their fees to perform the complex surgery in their own time, Kade now is on her way to having aesthetically normal outer ears and restored hearing in both ears." Charitable donationsChris Chadwick, Hospital Director of Spire Fylde Coast Hospital, presented some of the proceeds of the £14,500 raised at the hospital's annual Charity Ball to Wishing Well House, a local charity providing music therapy for autistic children. Receiving the donation are Lucien Coulon, the inspiration behind the idea to create Wishing Well House, and his sister Nikita.
