It isopen to all CIOL members who work as professionaltranslators, as well as student members interested in acareer in translation. We aim to provide a range ofservices to members in the form of professionaldevelopment (CPD) events, networking opportunities,informal peer-to-peer support through our various e-groups, and resources for practising translators.Our CPD programme caters to the needs of bothexperienced translators and new entrants to theprofession. Through these events, we explore keyaspects of working as a professional translator, includinglinguistic and terminology matters, technology tosupport translators, business resources and skills, andissues associated with freelance work.Last summer, we launched a series of local 'bite-size'CPD and networking events because we recognise thatbusy translators are not always able to give up a wholeday for such events, but that they do enjoy meeting upwith colleagues face-to-face. Each Translators' Armsevent focuses on a specific, practical aspect of workingas a translator, such as a particular technological orbusiness issue. They are held on Fridays and follow asimple pattern of tea/coffee, a presentation of 45-60minutes, time for discussion and then lunch nearby foranyone who wants to join in. We started with a series ofTranslators' Arms events in London and were sufficientlyencouraged by the interest to plan more for 2012 (seewww.iol.org.uk for details). In time, we would like to seeTranslators' Arms opening in as many towns and citiesas there are members willing to act as 'landlords'.As well as CPD events, we endeavour to includeevents on language and translation-related cultural orliterary topics. Typically our events provide opportunityfor socialising and networking. Details of forthcomingevents are publicised in The Linguist,on the Institute'swebsite, and via our e-groups and divisional mailing list.The Translating Division's e-groups - branded underthe 'TransNet' banner - are online discussion groups formembers to exchange information on a variety oftranslation-related topics. Posts cover subjects such astranslation technology, working as a freelancer and arange of business issues. Lucy BrooksLucy Brookshas been aprofessionaltranslator since1990, working mainly ontechnical and commercialtexts for businesses inGermany. A keensupporter of continuousprofessionaldevelopment, shearranges CPD training bywebinar for translatorsand interpreters all overthe world through hercompany, eCPDWebinars, which shefounded in 2010.Honorary Secretary ofthe Translating Divisionfrom 2006 to 2010, shehas been closely involvedwith the CIOL's TransNetsince 2001, starting withthe TM (translationmemory) eGroup in 2001.She was responsible fortransferring the paper-based TransNet mailinglist to its current format in2003 and coordinatedthe group until 2010. In2008, Lucy became oneof the first linguists toachieve CharteredLinguist status. Heather FulfordA Reader atAberdeenBusinessSchool (RobertGordon University) and Academic Director of its Centre forEntrepreneurship, Dr Heather Fulford hasheld previous academicposts at the University of Surrey andLoughborough University,where she is still a VisitingResearch Fellow. Heather has worked asa translator, and also as aresearcher on a numberof EU-funded translationsoftware design anddevelopment projects.The current TranslatingDivision Chair, she is alsoa member of the CIOLCouncil, the CharteredLinguist AdmissionsCommittee and theThrelford Committee. Heatherhas publishedarticles in academic andprofessional journals on arange of translation,terminology, informationtechnology, and smallbusiness managementtopics, and presentedpapers at manyinternational conferences. She completed an MAin Translation Studies anda PhD in TerminologyManagement at theUniversity of Surrey, andis a member of the BritishComputer Society and aFellow of the HigherEducation Academy.Alexandra JonesChiefExecutive ofCIOL in 2011,AlexandraJones was previouslyNon-Executive Director atthe NHS Hammersmithand Fulham (2009-10)and Director ofCorporate Services andBoard Secretary at theGaelic Board (2008-10).She was appointed to theBoard of Governors ofSabhal Mòr Ostaig (theGaelic College) of theUniversity of theHighlands and Islands in2011, and is also amember of its Committeeon Corporate Affairs.Alexandra has an MAin Classics and ModernLanguages and an MA inInternational Studies. Shehas translated poetry fromGerman, French, Greek,Latin and Gaelic intoEnglish, and was awardeda Gaelic Books Councilprize in 2010 for her ownpoetry in Gaelic.She has been a SeniorGovernance Adviser forthe United NationsDevelopment Programmein Indonesia andSecretary to the Board atthe CommonwealthSecretariat. Karen StokesA freelancetranslatorworking fromFrench intoEnglish in business, lawand internationaldevelopment, KarenStokes was awardedChartered Linguist(Translator) status in 2008.Since joining the CIOL in2001 she has held variouspositions on committeesand working groups, andcurrently serves as Vice-Chair of the TranslatingDivision and CharteredLinguist Admissionscommittees, and Chair ofthe Editorial Board of TheLinguist. She presents andwrites regularly on behalfof both the TranslatingDivision and the Institute. Karen is a guestlecturer on the MA inLegal Translation at CityUniversity and lectures onthe Diploma inTranslation preparationcourse at the University ofWestminster.
